The Skilly Ridge vineyard, planted by the Ingham family in 1994 produces an array of exciting varietal characteristics from each of the different planted varieties. Much thought was given to where each variety would be planted, and this saw the Riesling block thrive on a mixture of clay, loam and shale with an ideal easterly aspect.
For nearly 30 years, this vineyard has been meticulously cared for, attention being paid to shoot positioning, sun exposure and ideal canopy size. This careful management has produced fruit that earns a home in a special release wine.
This wine is enjoyable with or without food and will develop gracefully for up to 15 years.
Harvested in the crisp early morning of the 10th March 2022, the fruit was immediately crushed, chilled, de-juiced and then clarified. Only free-run juice was used to make this premium Clare Valley Riesling, ensuring purity and to minimize grape phenolics uptake during the pressing cycle.
The clarified juice was then inoculated with a neutral cultured yeast and steadily fermented for two weeks.
Following fermentation, the wine was left sitting on the fine lees for 9 months in a similar way done with some of the greatest Rieslings from Germany and the lees mixed occasionally to improve the richness on the palate and help preserve the freshness of the wine.
The wine was filtered and bottled in February 2023.
The 2022 Skilly Ridge Riesling is the 6th release of this special wine and from another outstanding vintage with great growing conditions for the variety. The core of the wine is built by citric fruit ( lemon, lime, grapefruit), with layers of white flowers and perfumed notes. The cooler ripening season resulted in a wine with concentrated and pure flavours on the palate, supported by a firm citric acidity that not only makes the wine a good match for food, but also gives it longevity.
