Description
The Heinrich family settled in Clare in 1940 and have had an important impact within the valley ever since. The family purchased the land to the north east of Clare in 1985 to plant a number of grape varietals soon after. We are lucky to now be the custodians of this beautiful property, which grows 1hA of Fiano.
Native to southern Italy, it comes as no surprise that this variety is a perfect match for Clare Valley terroir. The vines are able to produce a strong stylistic example of Fiano characteristics.
We have chosen to create a textural stlye of Fiano, concentrated and delicious with lifted tropical lychee and peach flavours, balanced with fresh grassy herbal notes and a creamy yet crisp finish. Naturally this style of wine goes well with pasta and white meat dishes.
Winemaking Notes
It is incredibly important to harvest Fiano at just the right moment in order to successfully produce this particular style of wine.
At the optimum ripeness, the fruit was harvested and delivered to the winery in the cool of the morning toward the end of February. The fruit was crushed immediately, pressed and cold settled. Following juice clarification and a careful and steady fermentation, the wine spent a few months in contact with lees with some battonage in order to build richness and texture on the palate. This release of our small-batch Fiano was stabilised, clarified and bottled in January 2022.
Growing Conditions
The 2021 vintage followed one of the most steady and restrained ripening periods we have experienced for a number of years. This has led to retained natural acidity providing a refreshing subtle citrus zest and crisp, crunchy fruit character with balanced residual sweetness in the middle palate.
Food Pairing
This style of wine goes well with Italian food, including shellfish, pasta, chicken and pork dishes.
