2009 Reserve Tempranillo

Clare Valley
Bottle size
750 mL

As the principal variety of the world-renowned wines of Rioja, Tempranillo has long been the backbone of the Spanish red-wine industry. We discovered many years ago that drinking these wines from Rioja could be a wonderful experience and so decided to search for the appropriate site, soil and clone to plant in our vineyards at both Watervale and Clare. On an exploratory trip to Spain to meet the winemakers and taste wines in Rioja, Tim met Isaac Muga, who agreed to work with us in Clare for vintage 2004. In 2004, we planted 6.5 hectares of tempranillo on our Ladera vineyard in Clare. This wine, from the 2009 vintage, was selected from individual barrels before blending and exhibits the definitive Tempranillo characters of strawberry and cherry, in harmony with clove and cinnamon spice derived from 18 months aging in new and second-use French oak. The wine is spicy and savoury by Australian standards and is lower in alcohol than most red wines we make. It has been sealed under screwcap to ensure freshness and authenticity. The wine will develop to its full potential over the next 10 years.

Growing Conditions

Good spring rains saw the vines off to a good start. This was followed by a short heat wave, but fortunately, the vines had not yet begun their ripening process and were able to cope with the heat and produce lovely aromas and flavours.

Deepish red colour with some developed touches but also a youthful purple tint. The bouquet is herbal, earthy, toasty and showing some maturity as well as a touch of mint. The wine is medium-bodied and quite intense, with a most appealing softness and charm, the flavours and texture are really balanced and inviting.

A gentle, medium-bodied wine with richness and reserve that has plush and pure poached-cherry flavours on the mid-palate. Age has smoothed its edges, and the elements of acidity and tannin have mellowed. It is an ultra-soft, quiet and respectful wine that is lovely on its own though also a good complement to moderately-flavoured food. It is extraordinary to get an eight-year-old wine at this price. No need to cellar as it is ready to drink.

We all have friends we have known for years. They are reliable,
predictable and worthy of our respect. The wines
we like aren’t much different. But every now and then we
make a new friend that just blows us away by being a bit
different and captivating at the same time. Tempranillo is a
grape variety that has made the Rioja region in Spain world
class. And Tim Adams et al have created an example of
stunning balance with dark cherry flavours and lashings of
cinnamon and cloves. It blew me away and was so refreshingly
different and delicious at the same time. With friends
