2016 Botrytis Riesling
- Clare Valley
- Bottle size
- 375 mL
A humid and cool end to vintage weather-wise proved conducive to botrytis infection in our selected Riesling block. The level of infection has produced a luscious and very sweet wine with subtle botrytis characters in harmony with Riesling citrus and floral characters. The wine is delicious with fresh fruit, desserts and full flavoured cheeses. Sealed with a screw-cap closure, our Botrytis Riesling will continue to improve in bottle for a period of at least 10 years.

A humid and cool end to the 2016 vintage was conducive to botrytis in the Clare, and hence this delightfully pure and fragrant style that captures the precision of Tim Adams’ riesling in all of its citrus purity, beautifully contrasting the honeyed, poached pear complexity of botrytis. This is not a super sweet botrytis and it upholds its tension and focus impeccably. 94 points.
There are late ripening sweeties and then there are “Botrytis” affected
wines, in which a fungus, often termed “noble rot” gathers on the skins
of grapes and essentially sucks out the juice thus concentrating the
sugars and flavours. The result here includes typical stewed
apricot aromas, then a quite distinctive gear shift with an
elderflower note in the tasting. The mouth feel less
viscous than many similar styles, allowing a more savoury
layer than usual. Gastronomic.
